module 13 and 14 videos

1.) From the video, The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art, I learned how different art can be. I learned that art to some people might not be art to other people. These drawings were much different than the other two videos. This video was more fun than the other videos. It wasn’t like I was watching a history video like the other two. I learned these influenced comic books, rock and roll, and surfing. It is known as Lowbrow, but can also be called Pop Surrealism. I learned art doesn’t always necessarily have to be proper. Some of these paintings were in great detail including smoking and nude drawings. They brought up that the 50s and 60s are more of an interesting time to live in and some of the works are inspired by these time periods. I learned that art is involved in things most people wouldn’t think of. When looking at a comic book, most people don’t think about the art of the cover. They look at the story in the comic book.
From the video, Displaying Modern Art, I learned about different forms of art even back as far as 1917. I was able to see what these art museums looks like and what type of art they have. It seems as if many art museums are set up in a similar way. They have paintings hanging on the walls evenly spaced apart and may include a sculpture in the middle of the room. This gives viewers something else to look at other than just the paintings on the walls. It makes the room look more full. I learned the reason certain paintings are placed in certain museums. This is being they follow the same theme. This is useful to people who are looking to go to a museum that has the same theme paintings. If someone is interested in a certain piece of art, they will want to see more art that is similar.
From the video, An Acquiring Mind, I learned about Philippe de Montebello and his history that made him interested in art. He was the Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art for 31 years. His museum is of art around the globe. The collection continues to grow. I was able to see different pieces of art that are in this museum and the video discussed the meaning of these. I learned about the different pieces of art that have been added to the collection and the years that they were added. I learned that there are many details to a piece of art. For example, the painting of a woman seen from the back. It shows a woman’s back and her dress slightly off her shoulder. It makes the viewer want to see the front of her and see her face. Some people may not have noticed this without being told the point of the painting. I learned about how Tate curators developed a new method of utilizing theme-based museum sections.
2.) Two of the videos did not relate to the creation of my Art Exhibition project. With this project I was looking more so of paintings that have color and stand out. It seems to me like many of these paintings were about history or olden day people. The viewer can tell that these are olden day by the way the people are dressed in them. Many of the paintings remind me of gods and goddesses. The Lowdown on Lowbrow film was much more interesting to me and more helpful. Although this film contained odd pieces of art, I liked these more than the history paintings. I think these are more interesting to look at.
3.) I personally didn’t enjoy the film of An Acquiring Mind. I didn’t think that helped me get a better understanding of the art. I also didn’t find the paintings that were shown to be very interesting. The sculptures didn’t interest me even though the art itself was in great depth. I’m more interested in artwork that has color and aren’t of olden day people. I don’t enjoy artwork that involves history. I thought the Displaying Modern Art film helped more than An Acquiring Mind film. It was helpful in giving keep concepts about art and art detail, but the paintings shown weren’t interesting to me. I think they are helpful in understanding art more fully, but these paintings aren’t the type of work that interests me. It gave me more of an understanding how theme-based museums are created and set up. The Lowdown on Lowbrow was the most helpful video of the three. These paintings were more interesting and colorful, which I like. I think this video was helpful in adding depth to my understanding of the different types of art around the world. Art is involved in so many different things in life and many people do
