Art Gallery Visit #3

This is created in 1637 by Pietro da Corona. The title is Bust of a Young Woman Turned to the Left. It was created with black and red chalk and heightened with white on gray-brown paper. I chose this picture because even though it is not colorful, it has a lot of detail to it. The only color in the picture is of her cheeks. I also like the shadow that is used on her neck.

This picture is called In the Conservatory. It was created by Edounard Manet in 878-1879. I chose this piece because I liked what it was created with and I like the color detail that is added to it. It is a painting and I think paintings are one of the best types of artwork. Painting is very difficult because the paint can run and go in places that the artist may not want it to. I think that this artist has a good way of using paint as their art material.
This is by Christen Kobke and is titled Portrait of the landscape painter Frederik Sodring. It was created in 1832. It is also a painting. I liked this painting because not only was he in great detail, but his surroundings were as well. Even though the viewer can tell that this isn't a real image of him, it still looks life like. She brings the image to life because of the detailing on him.

To create my self portrait, I used just pencil and paper. Even though this is basic, I found it easier to create my portrait that way. I am not very patient with art, which is most likely why I don't draw very well. If something doesn't come out the way I want it to and picture it in my head, I get impatient. This is why I don't like using charcoal. It is very difficult and messy to use to me. I have seen some people that can use it and make pictures look very life like. Art takes time, patience, and effort. I found it difficult to make the features in my face exactly the way they should look. I also found it difficult to space my eyes out the correct length and make my eyes the same. I think all the figures in the face are difficult especially the nose. Drawing pictures of people are more difficult than one would think. I overcame these challenges by redoing it if I had to to try to get it to look the way I wanted. I used shape, direction, and value. Shape was used because I had to correctly shape all the features on my face. I used direction because I had to create different direction of lines, whether it be horizontal, vertical, or oblique. I used value in the different shadings in the drawing. I enjoyed working on this project to see if I could actually create a portrait that somewhat looked like me. I knew that this wasn't going to be exactly perfect and I discovered that I am no artist, but it was interesting to try to create an image of myself. I think that my final artwork is decent for not drawing often. The last time I took an art class was in middle school and I haven't drawn since. The ending portrait does not look like myself at all. I think the image looked more like Pocohantas than myself. From this project I learned that drawing people is very difficult. It is not as easy as it looks and people that can creating pieces of art that look like the person they are drawing are very talented people.

Reflection on Project 4

This was one of my favorite projects done all year. I thought it was interesting to find different artist's work that would fit a certain theme. At first I was having a difficult time picking a theme because I wasn't sure at all what I wanted to do. The first picture I came across was the one of Marilyn Monroe. This made me want to find all pictures that were in the olden times. I also thought it would be better if all the pictures were in black and white because containing no color lets the viewer see just how old these pictures are. I liked that some of the pictures I choose had history to them and were of actual people. This project showed me that there are so many different ways that art can be created and that art  can be created. I liked creating the different slides for each picture. I also made sure that my project followed a certain pattern. Once I knew what I wanted that to be the rest of the project was easy. I tried to follow the same thing on each slide. I think this project was good for teaching us how to make connections to different pieces of art to one another.

Reflections of AED 200

1.) What were you expectations for this course and where they met?
I think my expectations for this course were met. I actually really enjoyed this course. It made me realize more that I like art more than I thought. It made me see that art is used more than I use to think. It definitely helped me become more interested in art, although I am not very good at creating art myself. I expected this course to teach me different things about art and it did that. I also expected it to bore me because art was never really something I was very interested. After spending a semester in an art class, it makes me want to take more classes in art. Even though this was just an elective course, I found it to be enjoyable.
2.) Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting?
I think art is almost everything. To some, looking at a certain statue may not be art, but to others it may be art. I learned that art could be all sorts of things, not just drawings and paintings. Art is open-minded and involves things in our daily lives. Art involves many different ideas and takes very talented people to create some of the art that we see. Using certain art materials such as charcoal I found to be very difficult, but to some people this is a natural thing.
3.) Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?
My favorite artist in my original posting was Thomas Kinkade and he is still my favorite artist. I like his paintings so much because they involve so much detail. Also, I am in love with Disney, which is what a lot of his paintings are based off of. I like how he makes the characters look so real and when he creates paintings of the ocean, he makes the sun reflect on them, which makes it even more life like. My favorite thing he does is hide other Disney characters in his paintings. For example, his painting of Ariel looking towards the castle, Cinderella is hidden in the castle very small. It takes a good eye to see this. I never noticed this because until I got one of his puzzles. Then I continued to get the Disney puzzles and saw that there was a small Disney character in each painting. I find it fascinating that he does this.

4.) Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?
I still enjoy online classes more. I was a full time online student balancing working at Disney as well and I loved having online classes. I didn’t have to take time out of my day to go to class weekly. I knew when my assignments were due and paid attention to when I had free time to do them. I liked that I could go at my own pace and I didn’t have to sit in a classroom everyday. If I could finish my degree online, I would. Many students don’t like online courses because they aren’t self-disciplined enough to actually do the work, but I feel more motivated to do my schoolwork taking online classes. This semester was much easier for me than my previous semesters. I have been in 6 classes, so taking 4 online was much easier for me, even though I had long hours of working here at Disney.

module 13 and 14 videos

1.) From the video, The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art, I learned how different art can be. I learned that art to some people might not be art to other people. These drawings were much different than the other two videos. This video was more fun than the other videos. It wasn’t like I was watching a history video like the other two. I learned these influenced comic books, rock and roll, and surfing. It is known as Lowbrow, but can also be called Pop Surrealism. I learned art doesn’t always necessarily have to be proper. Some of these paintings were in great detail including smoking and nude drawings. They brought up that the 50s and 60s are more of an interesting time to live in and some of the works are inspired by these time periods. I learned that art is involved in things most people wouldn’t think of. When looking at a comic book, most people don’t think about the art of the cover. They look at the story in the comic book.
From the video, Displaying Modern Art, I learned about different forms of art even back as far as 1917. I was able to see what these art museums looks like and what type of art they have. It seems as if many art museums are set up in a similar way. They have paintings hanging on the walls evenly spaced apart and may include a sculpture in the middle of the room. This gives viewers something else to look at other than just the paintings on the walls. It makes the room look more full. I learned the reason certain paintings are placed in certain museums. This is being they follow the same theme. This is useful to people who are looking to go to a museum that has the same theme paintings. If someone is interested in a certain piece of art, they will want to see more art that is similar.
From the video, An Acquiring Mind, I learned about Philippe de Montebello and his history that made him interested in art. He was the Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art for 31 years. His museum is of art around the globe. The collection continues to grow. I was able to see different pieces of art that are in this museum and the video discussed the meaning of these. I learned about the different pieces of art that have been added to the collection and the years that they were added. I learned that there are many details to a piece of art. For example, the painting of a woman seen from the back. It shows a woman’s back and her dress slightly off her shoulder. It makes the viewer want to see the front of her and see her face. Some people may not have noticed this without being told the point of the painting. I learned about how Tate curators developed a new method of utilizing theme-based museum sections.
2.) Two of the videos did not relate to the creation of my Art Exhibition project. With this project I was looking more so of paintings that have color and stand out. It seems to me like many of these paintings were about history or olden day people. The viewer can tell that these are olden day by the way the people are dressed in them. Many of the paintings remind me of gods and goddesses. The Lowdown on Lowbrow film was much more interesting to me and more helpful. Although this film contained odd pieces of art, I liked these more than the history paintings. I think these are more interesting to look at.
3.) I personally didn’t enjoy the film of An Acquiring Mind. I didn’t think that helped me get a better understanding of the art. I also didn’t find the paintings that were shown to be very interesting. The sculptures didn’t interest me even though the art itself was in great depth. I’m more interested in artwork that has color and aren’t of olden day people. I don’t enjoy artwork that involves history. I thought the Displaying Modern Art film helped more than An Acquiring Mind film. It was helpful in giving keep concepts about art and art detail, but the paintings shown weren’t interesting to me. I think they are helpful in understanding art more fully, but these paintings aren’t the type of work that interests me. It gave me more of an understanding how theme-based museums are created and set up. The Lowdown on Lowbrow was the most helpful video of the three. These paintings were more interesting and colorful, which I like. I think this video was helpful in adding depth to my understanding of the different types of art around the world. Art is involved in so many different things in life and many people do
