week 12 videos

I choose to watch Andy Warhol: Images of an Image and Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the 50s and 60s. The reason I chose these two videos is because I have heard of Andy Warhol before and was interested in knowing more about his life. Also the title seemed interesting to be of an image on an image. I chose the second video because I think the 50s and the 60s are an interesting time period. I think it would be a good time period to have lived in so I was interested in learning more about the art of this time. From the first video, I learned that Andy Warhol didn’t want to be an artist from the beginning of his childhood; he wanted to be a tap dancer. He became interested in art later in life and made images of coke bottles and soup cans. Although this seems like an easy thing to draw, his drawings included many details. Andy Warhol collected photographs of famous people. One person was Marilyn Monroe. This is what made him famous. I found this to be interesting because he became famous because of another very famous person. Everyone knows about Marilyn Monroe and he used her picture to create an image on an image. Elizabeth Taylor was another person that he created a picture of. I like that he bases his artwork off of other people and images. I think this is creative even though it is copying an image. He makes it his own way, which is unique. I liked how it showed his different pieces of art of famous people and how he made them colored rather than black and white. He used a silk screen instead of drawing it. This means that anyone could create it. He created a repetition of the same image. Although it is the same image, it still looks like a piece of art. It’s better than looking at just one image. It is used to form dizziness and shows an image of an image. From the second video I learned, about abstract paintings. We travel towards it in imagination, but it meets us halfway. I think that abstract paintings are fun to look at. The video talked about the artist Kline and his work of abstract art. He died at the age of 51 and used different colors to blend in his work. The video talked about each color that he would used to blend in with a certain color. These details are important. Even though mixing colors seems easy, it is not as simple as one may think.  The videos relate to the reading in explaining the same type of thing the book did. The videos helped get a better understanding of certain things such as abstract painting and images on and image. I like watching the videos more because I can see a picture with what is being explained. I really enjoyed the first video because it was interesting to me. I liked that I had chose this video because I always had seen multiple images of the same image but, to see how this was created gives me better knowledge on it. Also, his drawings were of things that I was familiar with, such as Marilyn Monroe. It is interesting to find out how artists come up with certain ideas and where they first started their ideas. I like that the video showed the images being created. It is easier to understand when the viewer can watch what is being done, rather than just reading about it. From the second video I liked learning about how artists think. It lets the viewer go in the mind of the artist because it explains what they see and think and why they used certain colors that they did. They add depth to the understanding because they provide actual examples and show how they are created. I think videos are typically more interesting than the readings because there are pictures and examples of what they are discussing. 

Week 11 videos

The two videos I chose to watch were Expressionism and The Impact of Cubism. The reason I choose these two videos was because I wanted to learn more about them other than what we read in the textbook. I also chose Cubism to talk about in one of my responses, so I was interested on seeing a video about this.

From the Expressionism video, I got to see many different paintings and discussed what each painting was about. Expressionism emphasized color’s emotional properties. One painting that stood out to me was the one that was called Madonna. It is of a woman who is without clothes and has long black hair. It looks as if she is wearing something on top of her head, like a red hat. Her body looks relaxed. It tried to reveal the emotions the lied between the surfaces. Many of the paintings were different and not like anything I have see before. They are mainly of women it appears. Another painting that stood out to be was the one of the woman holding a kitten’s head down to drink water. This painting has more colors and stood out to me because of the kitten.

From the second video, it takes the viewer through an art gallery. The art gallery walls are all white. This makes the paintings stand out more and it makes the room look classy. The video shows the different paintings and discusses certain paintings that are in the gallery. The first painting that was shown is hard to understand. The author tries to explain what it means. It is many different shapes put together with different colors. The artist turns a cylinder into a bottle rather than a bottle into a cylinder. The way artists think is interesting. They have their own type of minds and different ideas for their paintings that many non-artists would not this of. I liked the second video more than the first because it was more interesting to me. The first one seemed more olden day.

The videos relate to the readings in the text because both discuss the same topics. The videos show more and give more examples than the book. They both talk about the same artists of the time and showed their different drawings. The videos show more examples of different paintings from the various artists. The videos explain more about each drawing and show more paintings. It also talks about the artist’s history as well. It provides the same information, but in some cases more.

These videos weren’t as interesting as I would of expected. I like that the videos showed examples and discussed each painting as it was being shown, but I would have liked more than this. I think the videos would have been better if it wasn’t showing just drawings and a man discussing them. I think the videos would have been better if there were subtitles at the bottom that showed the artists and what the painting is called. It is sometimes hard to hear what the painting is called or know who the artist is. It would be easier if it were shown at the bottom of the screen. It has an emotional effect. The Blue Horse was also an interesting painting because it is unrealistic to see a blue horse. 

Polynesian Wyland Gallery

Step 1: The title of the art gallery is Wyland Art. There are two located on Disney property one at the Polynesian Resort and one at the Boardwalk Resort. For this project I will be discussing the Polynesian gallery. I think the overall theme of the gallery is paintings with Disney characters in them or sunsets and ocean paintings since Florida is a tropical place. The paintings seen in this gallery are mainly those types of paintings. There are many different artists that have paintings in this gallery. I was unable to take pictures myself, but Wyland Gallerias have a website that you can view all the paintings in the gallery. The website is Wylandflorida.com. This gives a list of all the artists that have work in the gallery and shows their art pieces as well. The website was helpful because I was still able to upload the certain paintings I wanted to discuss about, even though I couldn't take the picture myself.

Step 2: The type of lighting that is used is directly on the paintings so the public can see them better. The light focuses on the paintings. I think this is so that guests notice the paintings rather than just have ordinary lighting on the ceilings. The lighting isn't too bright either. The colors on the walls are neutral colors. It makes the paintings look better using neutral colors such as browns and tans because it doesn't focus the viewers eye to the wall it makes them look at the painting instead. Some of the walls are wooden as well. The movement of the viewer is in a circle. The art gallery isn't very big because it's located in a resort, but there is still many pieces of art to see. The paintings are close together so there are a lot of different ones. The reason the art gallery is set up like this is so that the viewers see every piece of work it has to often because they just follow the circle. There are shelfs near the window that include glass sculptures that aren't on the walls. This allows the viewer to see paintings, but also glass sculptures as well. It gives them a variety of art to look at.

Step 3: The artwork is organized on the walls. It has a mixture of paintings with Disney characters and ocean view pictures. The artworks are similar because many of the have Mickey or Minnie in them as well as other Disney characters. This leaves the viewer with something to remember. There are also many ocean paintings with palm trees and sunsets. The paintings are different because each artist has their own way of creating art. Even though they are on similar topics like the Disney characters they each have their own work into them and the way they do things. The pieces of art are framed mainly in black or brown frames. This is as well a neutral color. The framework completes the artwork. It makes it look much better because it gives it character. The artwork is identified and labeled by showing who the artist who created it is and what the name of the artwork is. This is useful because people sometimes cannot read the artists signature at the bottom for various reasons. The paintings are fairly close to each other. This is so they are able to fit more artwork into the small area that they have. These gives the guests more options to look at because they aren't spaced out. It's very interesting that Disney has art galleries located right in Disney. I think this is helpful in showing people numerous artists because Disney is one of the most popular places in the world and has many tourists.

Step 4: 

The first painting I have selected to discuss is Children of the Sea by Wyland. This painting to me was very cool. I like how the dolphins are labeled as the children. When he refers to children of the sea, he means the dolphins. The choice of blue coloring he used in this is very pretty. He uses dark blue at the bottom of the ocean and light blue at the top. This makes sense because the further down the ocean you get, the darker it is. It is more lighted at the top because of the sun. He makes rocks at the bottom to show that the dolphins are at the bottom of the ocean. The title gives the viewer the opportunity to decide what they think the painting is about. I think this painting is describing dolphins and how they play around at sea. His message may be to let us know that dolphins do live there and they are important. Since they do live in the ocean it is important to keep it clean. This could be why he chose to make the ocean clear and clean.

The second painting I have choose to discuss is by Walfrido Garcia. It is of an ocean and a sunset. This specific one stood out to me because of his use of colors. He makes certain parts of the waves stand out by using a greenish blue color. It is a very beautiful color. He continues to make the waves as if they were real life like. I like how he adds the sunset reflecting on the ocean. This also makes it look real life like. His painting is the type of paradise most people would enjoy to be in. In the sky he uses red and orange. This makes the sunset stand out because of the bright red. He added rocks to this drawing as well. Lastly, it the viewer looks closely they can see that there is a whale fin in the water. Overall, I thought this painting was extremely pretty.


The last painting I chose to discuss was by Rodel Gonzalez. This was one of my favorite painting because it is of the Disney castle. I like that he added more to it other that just the

castle as Disney. He choose to have white horses running towards it. I think he used white horses because white horses and very pretty and not average. The white horses could be referencing Cinderella's white horses because that's what color they were in the movie. Since they are going towards "Cinderella's castle" it seems as if they were referencing her horses. He has the castle reflecting on the water in a mixture of baby blue and white. This makes the painting look better. He also uses pink and orange in the sky. This is because he is making it look like what the sky looks like right as the sun is going down.

I really enjoyed this art gallery. I think it is great that Disney offers this to guests. It has made me more interested in paintings because most of these work is truly amazing. Many artists know how to make a painting life like. They also do a great job at making the characters look the correct way. Their use of colors really makes the paintings unique. It interesting to see the ideas that these people come up with because of their creativity.
